I ventured into encaustic art in July 2024 at a workshop with Edith Beattie at the Schoodic Arts for All Summer Arts Festival. Though I had no painting background (I’m primarily a fiction writer), I was drawn to the medium’s use of wax and fire.
After a year-long pause due to lack of space and materials, I returned in July 2025 for an advanced workshop, fell in love with encaustic, and decided to go all in. I secured studio space, acquired materials, joined online communities and classes, and began a daily practice focused (for now) on exploration and learning rather than mastery or commerce.
I've been experimenting widely with myriad techniques, tools, colors, and textures, and I gravitate toward abstract work with intense color, depth, and a balance of chaos and control. I’m especially drawn to politically and emotionally charged abstraction, inspired by artists such as Anselm Kiefer, Mark Rothko, Louise Nevelson, and Jacob Lawrence. (March, 2026)
